Water colour Painting Demo by Vikas Patnekar

Watercolorist Vikas Patnekar gave a demo at the Indiaart Gallery on the 9 th of September of water-color painting to an avid group of amateur artists, students and art lovers.

A well-structured demo, which explained step-by-step the artists' way of working. His first step was a quick pencil sketch of the water-sketch he intended painting, which he then transferred to a ½ imperial paper. He then demonstrated the use of masking gum, to leave lines and dots of white areas as highlights. This was followed by giving a wash to the whole paper using a 'mop' brush and then quickly working with cobalt blue he painted in the sky and then other areas of the landscape, using a palette of tonally compatibly colors to create contrasting areas of the land-scape.

Right through the demo, he encouraged the viewers to question him freely, making it a friendly interactive session. Asked why he used such large sizes to work on, Vikas said, he even worked on 4' x 6' size works, as he enjoyed the freedom of working on larger works and also he has the confidence of 15 yrs. of handling this challenging medium.

Watercolor Painting Demonstraion by Diwakar Dengle

A demonstration in water colour by Dr. Diwarkar Dengle was arranged at Gandhi Bhavan near Woodlands Soc., adjacent to Mahatma Society. This demo was arranged for the benefit of enthusiastic people and for those who couldn't complete their eagerness in leaving art due to some reason. Also this demo was arranged as per the request of Kothrud residents under the expert's guidance.

To begin with Dr. explained about the material and requested the viewers to use best quality of colours, brushes, variety of handmade papers, etc. He explained that the handmade paper has the good capacity to hold the water applied on it therefore get desired water colour effect with better transparency. He also explained how to arrange colour palette, how much colour to take on palette, how to take care of brushes. He suggested that before starting painting plan your rough sketch either with pencil or in colour on a piece of paper as guidance. He was keen to explain the intensity of each colour, so according to requirement one can reduce the tone of the colour. He also explained how to take care of brushes by washing up them in clean water & wiping them out the water, so that brushes can last longer with better points. He also explained caps of the colour tubes must be replaced at an earliest after finishing work to protect them from drying since they are water colours.

ELive Portrait painting Demonstraion by Vasudeo Kamath

Anil Naik, a senior professor from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, was invited by Indiaart Gallery to give a live-model painting demonstration. An experienced artist, who is adopted at handling most mediums, decided to use water colors for this particular demo.

This subject was a colorful ‘bandman’, who was hired as the artist’s model. The colorful bandman’s uniform, with his musical instrument made for an interesting subject. Using watercolors on a ½ imperial sized paper, Anil gave the ‘bandman’ a blackish-blue skin tone, which contrasted starkly with the red uniform, capturing the spontaneity of the subject.

This live-demonstration was followed up by a workshop under the guidance of Professor Anil Naik, which needless to say got a good response.
